New season, new trip to plan. Well, we’re here to help.
Quiet with nature
Need a break from the busy life of work and kids? South Jersey’s fall foliage is the perfect excuse to grab your coziest sweaters, head into the woods and take a little time off the grid. With plenty of hiking trails, waterways and unique landmarks, there’s a perfect trip for everyone.
Feeling adventurous? Find a campsite, like the Atsion Lake Cabins or the Parvin State Park campsites in Pittsgrove, to call home for a weekend and then take in the sites, look out for South Jersey’s wildlife and maybe even rent a kayak or canoe for a peaceful paddle on the water (Mullica River and Batsto River are two of our favorites). You can also find some pretty unusual attractions throughout South Jersey – like the eclectic Wade’s Salvage in Atco and Thomas Dambo’s Big Rusty art installation in Burlington County.
Not feeling adventurous? Grab a book, a few boardgames and a pair of binoculars then head to a cabin or campsite nearby and have a quiet retreat with South Jersey nature.
Shoulder season
The summer crowds may be gone, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had down the Shore. It’s called shoulder season, the time between the crowded summer season and the slow winter season, and it’s packed with plenty of events and activities like the Trail of Two Cities 5K in Ocean City (Nov. 2) and Tuckerton Seaport’s creek tours.
Spend a day following the Jersey Shore wine trail, with stops at Sharrott Winery in Hammonton and Cape May Winery. Squeeze in a little fun learning with one of the many museums that cover everything from maritime history (New Jersey Maritime Museum) or aircrafts (NAS Wildwood Aviation Museum) to the life of Harriet Tubman (Cape May’s Harriet Tubman Museum).
Spooky season
No one does spooky season quite like Cape May. All year long, Cape May MAC hosts a variety of tours that showcase the history and spooky stories of the elegant resort town. Take a trolley tour to hear ghost stories, attend a murder mystery dinner and even convene with spirits during a channeling dinner hosted by medium Craig McManus. Plus, next month the org hosts its annual Sherlock Holmes Weekend, full of mystery and intrigue and dashing, period-accurate costumes for a finishing touch. It’s also a chance to take advantage of hotel discounts and compete for a Cape May getaway for two.
Have a party
A weekend in Atlantic City is one of our favorite ways to blow off some steam. Filling the weekend with great food is a must, whether that means hitting White House Subs for a hoagie that’s the length of our arm or getting dressed up for a dinner at one of the city’s many upscale restaurants. (Did someone say Borgata’s Old Homestead Steak House?)
After food, we always end the night – or start it – with some prime entertainment. 98° & Bell, Biv, DeVoe are performing at Hard Rock Live at Etess Arena on Nov. 22, and the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino always has live music in the piano bar. Lenny Kravitz is performing at Ocean Casino Resort on Nov. 1. Low Cut Connie is performing at Anchor Rock Club on Dec. 7. If you want to keep the party going, stop by one of the casinos along the Boardwalk or even one of the clubs to dance the night away.
