Women’s Words

Over the years, SJ Mag has featured extraordinary women who have made an impact in South Jersey in many unique ways. Whether in a print or digital article, at our Women’s Empowerment Series or Women’s Roundtable, a special live interview event or an original video, women throughout our communities frequently show us all the wisdom, influence and inspiration they have to offer. And we have been there to document it all. It’s been an honor.

“At one point during chemo, I called my breast surgeon and said, ‘I don’t know if I’m ever going to be the same again. She told me, ‘No, you’re not. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be a new and improved Kathleen 2.0.’”

“I have people who come in and have never trained and say, ‘I want to do a triathlon with my friend. It’s in 3 weeks. That’s just not possible, and you’re going to set yourself up for failure.”

“While some might consider these details too private or embarrassing to be put into writing, I disagree, and I know my dad would too. Medical symptoms should not have to be hidden as shameful secrets. My dad was not his symptoms; suffering them was not his choice.”

“We started to realize that we were just being told to be happy for what we were given. Then we started to see the disparity between men and women. We weren’t fighting against the men, we were trying to fight for what was right…we made some strides that are important for the next generation. The whole goal was to leave the sport better than when I first came into it.”

“Young girls between ages 10 and 18 need from 1400 to 1800 calories per day, even more if they’re active. Educate them on what will happen if they aren’t eating enough.”

“No matter if you’re winning or losing, someone is inspired by those wins or losses. Someone is looking up to you and understanding that your journey is a place to go and your life matters. Being reminded that I’m a leader puts another fire under me to keep going.”

“My mom gave me the best advice ever. It was early on, and I was going to dealer meetings where it would be all men. I was so nervous, and she said, ‘You walk in there and you put your chin up, you put your shoulders back, and walk in like you own the place.” And I did that. Did I feel it inside? I did not. But then I went to another meeting and I did it again, and it was better. Then I did it again and again and again. Confidence is not something you earn; it is something you practice.”

Mindy Holman

“I was walking across the street when a driver almost hit me. As she drove away, she yelled, ‘This is America.’ I took that to mean she didn’t believe a face that looks like mine could belong in America.”

“When people automatically think that you’re one way – that you’re going to be meek, that you’re not going to speak your mind – it kind of gives me that extra edge…I’m going to prove you wrong, I don’t care what you think about me.”

“If you took all the NBA broadcasters and looked at their resumes the year they were hired, I highly doubt any of them would have called hundreds of games of college sports, had called at Olympic games, had called a Copa América and a Gold Cup, had called an NHL game, an NBA game and NFL games. I had to cross off so many boxes just so NBC and the Sixers could say, ‘Maybe we should consider her.’”
