Grab those number 2 pencils, school is back in session. And whether your child is psyched for the new school year or stressing over another session, we’ve got tips to help you make the back-to-school transition a little smoother this year.
There’s a board for that
The internet can be a wonderful place – especially on Pinterest. Katz JCC recommends checking out Pinterest to shake up the school year. Find everything from school lunch recipes and afterschool snacks to DIY school supplies projects. Plus, you can even find some ideas to make your school routine a little more fun.
A work space at home for homework
It’s so easy these days to get distracted by phones, TV screens, even other people. That’s why Moorestown Friends School teacher Sarah Rotter encourages parents to set up a space specifically for homework – away from distractions.
Put mindfulness to work
If your child has anxiety around heading back to school, teaching them how to practice mindfulness – and practicing it with them – can be a great tool for throughout the school year. Inspira Health suggests mindfulness as a way to stay present and help combat anxiety and stress.
Make some (parent) friends
You don’t have to go through the school year alone. The CDC recommends finding other parents who have kids of similar ages as your own. By creating a small network of parents, you can offer each other support, share information and experiences for a smoother transition.
Stay positive
Children see everything, and they often take our cues when it comes to reacting to situations, like a new school year. Cooper University Health Care suggests parents try to take a calm approach to handling questions and concerns. And if your child asks a question you don’t have the answer for, use it as an opportunity to both find the information together.
