The Cape May County Zoo welcomed a new member of the animal family this year – Nugget the bison!

Nugget is a male American Bison calf who was born to Beverly and Hank. He weighed a whopping 50 pounds approximately but will grow to around 2,000 as an adult. (American bison are the largest terrestrial animal in North America.) His bright orange coat will turn a dark brown in the coming months. 

As for his adorable name, we have the public to thank. During a voting contest in September, people were able to vote for one of 3 names – munchkin, donut or nugget – when they donated to the zoo. The contest raised over $3,000, and Nugget got his name.
