1. Historic Cold Spring Village

Now is a great time to explore Cold Spring Village because admission is free until buildings reopen for the season in June! The visitor center is still open, so you can pick up a map and lead yourself and the kids on a guided tour of all 26 centuries-old buildings on the village’s 30 acres of land. Tap off the visit at Cold Spring Brewery, the state’s first non-profit microbrewery.

2. Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge

Cost: $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 4 to 12

See hands-on exhibits, live snakes and turtles in the Reptile Room, then go on a guided tour and observe the animals who live at Cedar Run because they cannot care for themselves in the wild. Say hi to Sassafras, a white-tailed deer, Mike & Ike, Eastern gray squirrels and Phoebe Muffay, a striped skunk.

3. Palmyra Cove Nature Park & Environmental STEM Center

This 250-acre park along the Delaware River is a great place to explore nature and science. Get in your steps on trails and then check out exhibits, including Topobox, a sandless, augmented reality sandbox, and the Innovation Lab for virtual experiences in the deep sea to outer space. The nature park is open from dawn to dusk daily. Stem center hours are 9 am – 4 pm Monday through Friday.

4. Red Bank Battlefield and Whitall House

Cost: Free

A decisive Revolutionary War battle was won right on this Gloucester County site when patriot forces, though greatly outnumbered, defeated Hessian troops. Stroll through the riverfront battlefield and explore the stone forts and walls that fortified General George Washington’s men. The park offers pathways along the Delaware River and plenty of spots for picnicking, as well as a children’s play area.
