Learn About Hummingbirds

Fun Fact Friday: Ruby-throated Hummingbirds can beat their wings 53 times per second! The Ruby-throated Hummingbird is the only hummingbird that breeds in eastern North America, but it has the largest breeding range–in terms of area–of any hummingbird on the continent. Though they're known for feeding on nectar and sugar water, they will also drink tree sap and feast on a variety of insects including mosquitoes, gnats, fruit flies, and small bees–which they pluck from the air or pull out of spider webs. Putting out a hummingbird feeder is a great way to attract these little winged jewels, and the best food to give them is sugar water. Use pure, refined white sugar only (other sugars–brown sugar, honey, raw sugar, even organic sugar–have trace amounts of iron, which can kill them) and boiling water–one part sugar to four parts water. And avoid commercial solutions, which contain artificial preservatives and often red dye–both toxic to these little creatures. The best way to feed them, though, is to plant native flowers like cardinal flower, blazing star, coral flower, and wild columbine (which flowers early and provides nectar when many other food sources are unavailable). These plants are all available through our Native Plant Sale; you can order them online here: #wetlandsinstitute #stoneharbornj #hummingbird #nativeplants #conservation #FunFactFriday
