Hey, you need a break. But the good news is, you don’t have to go far to feel a little relaxed. Try out some staycations to have a bit of a reset on life.
For the peninsula prince/princess
Have you heard how easy it is to pack your trip full of fun on the Cape May peninsula? Well, let us help you. Kick off your trip with a breakfast at one of the many delicious eateries in Cape May and then embark on a Victorian adventure featuring elegant architecture (check out one of the Cape May MAC’s tours) and a sweet stroll down Washington Mall. You can end your evening with a whale watching trip courtesy of Cape May Whale Watcher, and then stop by one of the Shore town’s many eateries for an indulgent dinner.
For the history buff
It’s no surprise that South Jersey is packed with a rich history. But it’s not always easy to find spots where you’ll learn the secret stories of this area. Our suggestion – start in Burlington County. Specifically, the Burlington County Prison Museum, where you’ll learn the many stories of the criminals who called the building home. Then head over to Camden County to visit the Battleship New Jersey, with stories of sailors who took to the seas throughout history. And once you’ve returned to shore, stop by the Walt Whitman House to learn about the poet’s life and visit his grave in Harleigh Cenetery. Continue on to Haddonfield’s Indian King Tavern to step foot in rooms where some founding fathers met to discuss the revolution during their travels. And depending on the day, you might even see a reenactor dressed in Revolutionary War-era garb.
For the animal maniac
If you’re an animal lover, South Jersey has plenty for you to do. Starting with Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge, a center that cares for South Jersey’s wildlife and helps them rehabilitate, while also teaching visitors about their lives and habitats. Another must-see spot is the Funny Farm, where you can support abused and abandoned animals including Joey the cow, Billy the lamb and Connor the Emu. And if you want to get up-close-and-personal, visit the Cape May County Park & Zoo for an adventurous visit with animal encounters like meeting the capybara and feeding the giraffe.
For the creatives
Kick off your staycation with a day or two of inspiration, starting at Grounds For Scultpure – a 42-acre art park in Hamilton with plenty of larger-than-life sculptures. Continue your art immersion at WheatonArts, where you can see glass blowing artists demonstrate their craft and even sign up to try your hand at the delicate art. And don’t miss the variety of artist demonstrations at Atlantic City’s Noyes Arts Garage, where local artists host their own booths and special events are held to connect artists with the community.
