New Jersey’s Board of Public Utilities approved a plan last month to give South Jersey a new area code: 640.

The new digits will cover the 609 area, which includes parts of Mercer, Burlington, Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties. The area code is expected to roll out at the end of next year, when 609 is predicted to run out of phone numbers.

No one with the current 609 or 856 numbers will be forced to change, as 640 will only be for new cell phone customers in what is called an overlay process.
