With her new children’s book, Collingswood resident Kellie Miller hopes to encourage young girls to get involved in sports.
“Felicity Plays Field Hockey,” is the story of 8-year-old Felicity who is destined to be a field hockey star. After her first practice, Felicity learns that achieving that goal will be harder than she thought.
Miller played field hockey at Cherokee High School and was 1996 Player of the Year for South Jersey. She then went on to play at Princeton, to play in two Division 1 Final Fours and one National Championship game. She is now the mother of six children, four of whom are girls who play field hockey. Miller said she was moved to write a children’s book about the sport when her children couldn’t find one.
“In fact, I found very few sports books for girls at all,” Miller said. “We read about fairies and ballerinas and girls who love to play dress-up, why not field hockey?”
Miller, who works with girls as young as age five, all the way through high school, believes in the value of playing sports for all children, but especially for girls.
“Sports have had such a positive impact on my life, and it’s been an honor to help pass along that experience to my daughters and the girls I have coached. It’s my hope that ‘Felicity’ encourages little girls to pick up a stick and give the game I love a try.”
