When tech giant Amazon announced its plan to build a second headquarters, cities across the country scrambled to begin the bidding process. Bids are already in the works from cities like Boston, Austin, Philadelphia, Atlanta – and Camden.
The Freeholder Board unanimously agreed to submit a proposal for becoming the site for Amazon’s second headquarters on September 19. The county will work with New Jersey’s Economic Development Agency to make the bid, hoping to benefit from the eight million-square-feet of proposed office space and thousands of new employees expected to work at the new campus.
“Camden will be offering intangibles that other locations throughout the nation can’t come to the table with, whether that be affordability, accessibility, proximity or a qualified labor pool,” Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli says. “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and we are going to put our best foot forward.”
Cappelli also mentioned the quick drive to Philadelphia International Airport, close proximity to New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as the short drive to the beach for employees as a few of the site’s perks.
