How to keep your plants alive during a heatwave

We asked for summer weather, and summer definitely delivered. But what does that mean for our gardens? We asked SJ Mag Media resident gardener, Toni Farmer, for tips to help our plants survive a heatwave.

Water, water, water

You know how you reach for your water bottle when the temperature reaches 90 degrees? Well, your plants are having the same feeling. Make sure they’re getting enough water with daily waterings. And if you want to make your life easier, buy a sprinkler or make a note to add a drop hose (a hose with holes throughout) to add under your soil next year. Check your plants regularly by sticking a finger into the dirt – lower than just the surface – to make sure the soil is soaked through.

Gardening after dark

Ditching your gardening chores because it’s so hot outside is completely understandable, but it’s also going to set you up for failure this summer. When the heat wave rolls in, change up your schedule and do your gardening after dinner when the temps start to drop.

Don’t waste water

There are two benefits of adding mulch to your garden. Not only does it conserve water to help the environment, but it also helps your plants stay hydrated during those stretches of extreme heat, trapping the water below instead of having it evaporate quickly in the high temperatures.

Look out for disease

Humidity and the garden do not mix. But since the is the East Coast, we’re kind of stuck with it. And that means you’ll want to keep a close eye on your plants to stay on top of any disease that starts to crop (ha) up.

A Vacay plan

We all love a beach week when the temperatures climb to unbearable highs, but don’t leave your plants behind while you run off to relax. If you’re leaving, especially during a heat wave, ask someone to check in and tend to your garden while you’re gone to keep everything growing strong and delicious.
