How Screening Mammograms Improve Your Breast Health

Being proactive about your health means paying attention to the details, especially the ones that are easy to overlook.

For many women, their breast health falls into that category. Life is busy, and sometimes preventive care like a screening mammogram doesn’t make the top of the list.

But it should.

A screening mammogram is a step to make a major difference in your breast health.

What is a Screening Mammogram?

A screening mammogram is a special type of X-ray that checks for early signs of breast cancer in women who may or may not be experiencing symptoms.

It’s a quick, routine study to detect cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages. In fact, mammograms can find changes in the breast up to 3 years before they would be noticeable by touch or a symptom.

While risk factors do increase the likelihood of breast cancer, about 50% of breast cancers develop in women who have no breast cancer risk factors other than age and gender.

A screening mammogram takes about 15-minutes and involves slight compression of the breast for a few seconds while images are taken from different angles. While the compression may feel uncomfortable, there are several steps that can be taken to minimize any discomfort that we will discuss further below!

The Impact on Your Health

You may already eat mindfully, stay active, and take time for your mental health. Adding routine mammograms to your wellness routine supports the same goal: staying strong and healthy for years to come.

Prioritizing your breast health reflects the deeper value of being proactive about your body, not reactive. Making time for a mammogram shows that you’re not waiting for something to go wrong but rather staying ahead of the curve.

And when you pair routine screenings with healthy habits such as regular exercise, limiting alcohol, avoiding smoking, and maintaining a balanced diet, you are giving yourself the best possible chance against breast cancer.

Addressing Common Concerns

If you’re feeling hesitant, you are not alone.

One of the most common questions about mammograms is how painful it is. Most women feel only brief discomfort lasting seconds, but no pain.

The level of discomfort you may feel is based on several factors including breast size and hormone levels. Fortunately, you can minimize this by following our tips below before, during, and after you study.

Before Your Mammogram

  • Schedule with your menstrual cycle in mind: Your breasts may be tender the week before and during your period, which can make compression more uncomfortable. Schedule your mammogram for a time when your breasts will be least tender. As a rule of thumb, many experts recommend getting your mammogram at least one week after your menstrual period.
  • Take a mild pain reliever before your appointment: Consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever about an hour before your appointment to help you stay as comfortable as possible.
  • Avoid caffeine before your appointment: For some women, caffeine intake can heighten their sensitivity and affect breast tenderness.

During Your Mammogram

  • Practice calming techniques: Tension and anxiety can increase your discomfort. Take a few deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth, during the study. Think of your fun upcoming plans or a place you love to visit.
  • Communicate with your technologist: A technologist will be by your side every step of the way and is there to ensure a smooth appointment. Never hesitate to speak up if you are feeling discomfort. The technologist may be able to adjust your position or take other steps to make you more comfortable.

After Your Mammogram

  • Use a heating pad or cool compress: Your breasts may be sore after your mammogram, but the sensation rarely lasts long. You can apply mild heat or cold to your breasts to soothe any discomfort you may have.
  • Support your breasts: Wear comfortable clothing to keep your breasts supported.

How Often Should You Get a Mammogram?

Multiple guidelines recommend beginning annual screening mammogram at age 40, and to repeat them every 12 months.

If you have specific risk factors like a family history of breast cancer or dense breast tissue, your doctor may suggest starting earlier or getting screened using supplemental imaging.

This stresses the importance of getting your screening mammogram done at a center that offers a comprehensive approach in the event of breast ultrasounds or breast MRIs being recommended.

A Health Decision That Puts You First

Scheduling your mammogram is one of the simplest ways to put your health first. It’s not just about checking a box, but about knowing that you’re doing everything you can to take care of yourself.

Getting screened is a decision rooted in empowerment. You’re choosing clarity, early intervention, and the ability to stay in control of your health.

And perhaps most importantly, you’re setting an example for others in your life – your friends, sisters, and daughters – about preventive care.
