This year, we tapped some of our local health experts to help us put our health first. Check out some of our favorite lessons we learned about our health.
What ADHD looks like in adults…
“Chronic disorganization, struggles with time management, difficulty sustaining attention, those are the patterns we often see. That might mean missing details at work, losing focus in conversations or pushing tasks to the last minute.”

The latest advancement in post-cancer breast reconstruction…
One of my specialties and the specialties of my partners in this practice is that we do microsurgery. That is a breast reconstruction technique that uses the patient’s own tissue, which is transplanted to the breast for reconstructive purposes.

The effects obesity can have on your health…
I don’t think many patients realize obesity is a disease. They don’t realize their sleep apnea is related to obesity. Their heart disease is related to obesity. Their high blood pressure is related to obesity. Maybe for us, it’s a no brainer, but I don’t think patients realize the link.

What symptoms – besides hot flashes – can come on during perimenopause…
“People who have had postpartum depression or really bad PMS are more likely to get hit with this again during perimenopause. People come in on three or four different antidepressants, and when you start talking with them, you realize no one ever checked their hormone levels.”

Lynch syndrome is a hereditary syndrome that’s associated with multiple types of cancers. In the space of gynecology, endometrial cancer and a small portion of ovarian cancer are related to Lynch syndrome. Depending on the type of mutation, because there are multiple types that can be a part of this syndrome, there are recommendations for either risk-reducing surgery or increased screening for these patients.

The importance of lifting heavy weights…
We naturally lose muscle mass as we age, and for women, bone loss accelerates after menopause. The biggest concern is osteoporosis. When women don’t build and maintain muscle, they lose bone strength, making them more vulnerable to falls and fractures. Strength training helps maintain both muscle and bone health, which is key to staying strong and preventing injuries.

How tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte (TIL) therapy works to cure cancer…
TIL therapy harnesses the patient’s tumor-infiltrating T-cells – immune cells that have already identified the cancer as a threat. These T-cells are extracted from the tumor, expanded in a lab into billions, and reinfused into the patient’s bloodstream after chemotherapy clears the body of competing immune cells. Then patients receive a growth factor, IL-2, which encourages the immune system to attack the tumor fully.

These drinks are loaded with stimulants that can spike your heart rate and elevate blood pressure. Young people, whose bodies are still developing, and older adults with pre-existing heart conditions should avoid energy drinks entirely, while others should limit consumption and carefully read ingredient labels.
