South Jersey native Sara Wordsworth is pushing the boundaries on the Broadway stage. Her new musical, “In Transit,” needs no instruments – only the characters.

In Transit, the first Broadway a cappella musical, follows New Yorkers as they find their way around the city. It was written by Wordsworth, Russ Kaplan, James-Allen Ford and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, one of the creative minds behind “Frozen.” Now, the Drama Desk Award-nominated 2010 musical is set for a Broadway debut.

Wordsworth grew up in Linwood and Egg Harbor Township with parents who fully supported her Broadway dream. Her childhood was full of trips to theater in New York, including Broadway shows.

Lopez and Wordsworth became friends before Lopez and her husband collaborated on the Disney blockbuster film Frozen. While living in New York, Lopez and Wordsworth performed a cappella with other friends around the city. The group began performing original a cappella songs in the early 2000s, and, in 2002, opened a cabaret show of original songs at The Duplex.

That cabaret grew to become In Transit, with star-studded cast members joining along the way. Three-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall directs and choreographs, and Deke Sharon of “Pitch Perfect” arranges vocals.

You’ll have to wait another two weeks to see the show – previews start November 10. But you can watch a sneak peek of the opening number, “Deep Beneath the City/Not There Yet.”
