New Year, new set of goals. We’ve got some tips to help you stick to those exciting, and sometimes dreaded, list of achievements you’re hoping to check off this year.
Be SMART
When we’re setting goals at work, we always remember to be SMART…so why don’t we do the same with our personal goals? When you’re setting this year’s resolutions, make sure they’re Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely.
For example, instead of saying “I want to be healthier this year,” set out to eat one serving of fruit each day, or twice a week if you think that’s more manageable for yourself. This way you know exactly what you’re trying to do and how to know if you’ve achieved it as opposed to having the vague idea of “healthy” to follow through the year.
Visualize
Ask any professional athlete if they’ve visualized themselves winning upcoming games and they’ll probably say yes. Sixers’ Jared McCain recently spoke about how he uses visualization to help succeed on the court. And Muhammad Ali famously said, “If my mind can conceive it and my heart can believe it, then I can achieve it.” It works.
So why not do the same with your yearly goals? Either first thing in the morning or right before you go to bed, sit with your goals and imagine yourself achieving each one.
Make it a party
Friends make everything better. They’ll help you stay accountable, cheer you on to make the hard work feel a little easier and even give you advice when you’re faced with an obstacle. Get your friends involved in some of your New Year’s goals to lighten the workload and help you cross that finish line.
Write them down
It can be easy to forget your goals, especially when April and sunny days roll around. One of our go-to strategies to stick to our goals is to have them in front of us at all times. That starts by writing them down – whether on a sticky note, in a journal or on our computer. Some people will even make their list the lock screen on their phone as a reminder every day of what they’re trying to achieve.
