On the way to Cape May? Before you start your weekend getaway, check out these coastal activities that will make your trip one to remember.
Climb to such great heights
See the southernmost point of New Jersey from a new perspective – about 158 feet in the air. On your way up the 199 steps of the more than 100-year-old Cape May Lighthouse, you’ll learn about the history of the structure and its keepers. After (or before), explore the many trails of the surrounding Cape May Point State Park to get a peek at the Shore town’s nature.
Search for Whales and Dolphins
Grab your sunscreen – we’re going whale-watching! Oh, and dolphin-watching. Aboard Cape May Whale Watcher’s 110-foot boat, visitors watch the horizons for a chance to see whales and dolphins splashing in the Atlantic Ocean. Choose from a number of cruise types, including a dinner cruise, day cruise and special event cruises. You can even charter a private boat for your own event!
A history lesson
While Harriet Tubman’s time in Cape May was short – just 2 summers – her legacy will last forever. In a historic house on Lafayette Street, the exhibits at the Harriet Tubman Museum illustrate the history of Tubman’s work in Cape May and the work of her fellow anti-slavery activists who used that block as a home base. Purchasing tickets ahead of time is strongly recommended.
Tedx
Don’t miss the one-of-a-kind Tedx on Oct. 15. This local event is similar to the traditional TED talks, where a series of speakers share ideas worth spreading. This year’s topic is “Discoveries,” and speakers include filmmaker & illusionist Derek Salinger, opera singer Laura Baxter and whale researcher Dr. Anaïs Remili. Tickets cost $60 and include an open-bar reception. Program only tickets are $30.
Take farm-to-table to the next level
Trade in an ocean view for a beautiful garden and farmhouse one night as you dig into a BYOB meal prepared with food that was grown just feet from your table. During Beach Plum Farm’s Farm-to-Table Dinner Series, diners enjoy seasonal produce, organically-raised meats and more delicious food from the farm. The dinners are hosted Fridays and Saturdays from Mid-March through December, as well as on Thursdays during the summer.
Shop around
Shopping – but make it scenic. Head to Cape May’s Washington Street Mall to explore the colorful and unique storefronts offering everything from clothing and jewelry to groceries and bath products. And if you get hungry, stop into one of the many eateries along the street. It’s the perfect backdrop for your next shopping spree or window-shopping excursion.
