Transforming lives with therapy
As a therapist for over 25 years, Colleen Brigid Fitzpatrick, LCSW, says the impact she has with her patients all comes down to one thing: her spirit. “The spirit guides, and it can transform,” she says, “that’s what I do. I not only guide someone through the therapeutic process, but I help transform their life to what they’d like it to be.”
“My practice is very, very different,” she adds. “When you walk in, as one of my clients said, it looks like the set of ‘Friends.’ It’s laid back, and we have relaxed conversations that flow. I want to get to know my patient’s life story, connect the dots, and see how we can get them moving in a positive direction. We won’t solely focus on what happened when they were 10 or 12, but we’ll look at the patterns that have been built from specific situations. Are those patterns interfering with their adult life? By working through issues, I can help make people’s lives easier. We’ll also look at strengths – everyone has strengths. Sometimes you just have to realize what they are.”
Fitzpatrick notes that with each client, her guidance isn’t limited to a 60-minute session. “It’s important people know I care. In the beginning, I really try to get to know my client. They have to be able to trust me and feel comfortable with me,” she says. “Before each session, I’ll sit for quite a while and think about what we can do to get this person to a better place. Part of my work is coming up with creative interventions. I feel like it’s an honor to help people transform their lives.”
Since the pandemic, Fitzpatrick says, many people have been struggling. “I want people to know they aren’t alone. Reaching out for therapy can be scary, but it doesn’t have to be. I want to help you get back to life.”
