A very special hotel is opening in Mt. Laurel this month, and its guests may be a little different than what you imagine. Happy Cat Hotel & Spa is a luxury boarding experience created exclusively for felines. When the humans who adore them go away, they can rest easy knowing their pet is having a purrfectly wonderful time. (Be warned: this story is packed with puns.)

Guest cats can spend their days curled up in cozy hammocks, batting at toys, watching cat TV, enjoying playtime and room service provided by a kitty concierge and receiving paw-dicures – no barking dogs, no cramped cages and plenty of high perches for climbing and keeping a watchful (and mildly judgmental) eye on the world below.

Opening on May 10, the hotel features 33 private rooms, each custom-designed for comfort, play and peace of mind. Instead of cages, there are climbing walls, window perches, themed décor and a full menu of services to keep cats safe, pampered and entertained while their humans are away.

“When we travel, our cats need more than five or ten minutes of someone popping in to feed them. Cats need love, stimulation and attention. They’re family,” says owner Diane Kane, who lives in Mt. Laurel with her co-owner husband, Keith and two adored domestic shorthairs, Willow (the diva) and Sage (the chill younger sister). She never liked the idea of hiring a house sitter or boarding her cats in a facility designed primarily for dogs. Then she discovered the Happy Cat Hotel franchise and visited a location in Alexandria, Va. “It was spotless. The cats were climbing, playing and looking out windows. You could just tell they were happy.”

Just off Rte. 38 on Briggs Rd., the Happy Cat includes standard and deluxe rooms for up to 3 or 4 cats, plus 6 luxury suites with floor-to-ceiling windows that accommodate up to 5 feline guests from the same family.

Each room is decorated with a whimsical theme – think tropical tiki lounges, enchanted castles or cozy mountain cabins – designed to spark curiosity and keep feline guests engaged. But 2 rooms were designed especially for local cats. “Phelinedelphia” is complete with a miniature Liberty Bell and patriotic décor, while “Atlantic Kitty Boardwalk” features a raised boardwalk cats can stroll across and a mural of the oceanfront and fur-is wheels.

“There’s even a life-size kids’ bumper car,” Kane says. “It’s fun, but it’s also enriching for the cats.”

In addition to room service and playtime, the hotel offers an on-site spa with staff specially trained in feline grooming – a rare and much-needed service in New Jersey. Services range from plush trims and lion cuts to nail trims and colorful nail tips (yes, they’re totally safe for cats). “My cat Willow would be groomed every day if she could,” Kane says. “Many cats really love it.”

Rates are comparable to traditional boarding, but include far more perks, like daily photo updates, optional webcam access, and personalized reports on how each cat is eating, playing and settling in.

Best of all, every member of the Happy Cat team is a true cat lover. “That was the one thing I insisted on,” Kane says. “They’ve worked in vet offices, volunteered with rescues or have multiple cats of their own.”

Kane stresses how much peace of mind Happy Cat offers to cat parents who will be away. “They’re like our kids,” she says. “They deserve more than a food bowl and a quick visit. We can give them that.”
