South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center

South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center

Advances in healthcare now mean people are living longer than ever before, so it’s likely that large swaths of the population – including the country’s 76 million Baby Boomers – will have a need for vascular healthcare. Today, there is a great demand for treatments and services for issues affecting the circulatory system, which is much more likely to occur in older patients. Vascular health is one of the most rapidly growing areas of medicine in the United States.

That’s where South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center comes in. The state-of-the-art outpatient center, with its convenient location in Mt. Laurel, is dedicated to providing the highest quality of care and service to patients who require vascular procedures.

“We’re focused on the patient’s care and the patient’s needs,” says Paul J. Svigals, MD, a partner in South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center and a specialist in Interventional Radiology.

The wide field of vascular health

Vascular specialists, including Vascular Surgeons, Interventional Cardiologists, and Interventional Radiologists, treat nearly all the arteries and veins in the vascular system, and every year a large number of people turn to these professionals for help.

According to the Society of Vascular Surgery, between 8 and 12 million people in the United States are affected by peripheral arterial disease.

That means a significant percentage of people will require a vascular procedure at some point in their lives. South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center caters to patients who need everything from dialysis access procedures, peripheral vascular disease or varicose vein treatments to catheter maintenance or port placement.

Creating a collaborative – and cutting-edge – environment for doctors

What makes South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center unique, Dr. Svigals says, is that it isn’t accessible to only the doctors who work there full-time. In fact, the center’s doors are open to all specialists across the region who need an operating suite to best serve their patients.

“We are working to build this practice in a collaborative way, with other doctors working and bringing cases here,” Dr. Svigals says. “We have doctors bringing patients from all around – Interventional Cardiologists, Vascular Surgeons, Interventional Radiologists, and Pain Management specialists. We can do many different types of procedures at the surgery center.”

The collaborative environment, Dr. Svigals adds, means doctors aren’t jostling for time in an operating suite or struggling to schedule procedures. With South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center’s facilities at their disposal, a large number of doctors can treat an even larger number of patients.

“By integrating all these different specialists, these medical conditions get treated in a better way,” Dr. Svigals says. And those doctors need not worry that they’ll have to sacrifice quality for convenience.

“The equipment we have in our suite is as good or better than what they have in the hospital,” says Dr. Svigals. In fact, most physicians will find the equipment available is more comprehensive and more up-to-date than in a larger institution, where upgrades may happen a bit slower. “We have the most state-of-the-art technology in everything from imaging to balloons, catheters, stents and atherectomy devices,” says Dr. Svigals. “If there’s something a doctor wants that we don’t have – we’ll just get it.”

Quality care outside the hospital

There’s a major shift happening in healthcare, Dr. Svigals says, and South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center is leading the way.

“This has been going on for a while: medical care has been migrating out of the hospitals to different types of centers – surgery centers and doctors’ offices,” he says. “People don’t want to be in the hospital for good reasons. You waste a lot of time registering and sitting in waiting rooms and pre- and post-op areas. Plus, doing some procedures outside the hospital is safer, because infection rates are much lower.”

Dr. Svigals says common outpatient procedures can be performed more quickly and with less complications in a dedicated surgery center, so patients – and doctors – don’t have to deal with any inconveniences.

“We want to minimalize hospitalization rates,” Dr. Svigals says. “The way it’s going, hospitals will be places for very sick people. And that’s exactly the way it should be. We’re targeting procedures that can be done just as safely, by the same doctors, in our center. It’s a better experience all-around for patients and for doctors.”

South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center doesn’t require patients to “go through long admissions procedures then a long pre-procedure workup, then wait for the operating room to be free,” Dr. Svigals says. Plus, a scheduled procedure won’t be pushed back or rescheduled because a more emergent case shows up.

“Many times, a patient may find their procedure is delayed or cancelled in a hospital setting because of an emergency that came up. We don’t get backed up like that,” he adds.

The waiting room at South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center – with its comfortable furniture and giant fish tank – is a nice place to be. But on the day of their procedure, patients can expect not to be there for very long. They also won’t face long wait times when it comes to scheduling.

“In many places, if a patient needs to schedule an appointment with a doctor or have a procedure performed, the wait times are unbelievable,” Dr. Svigals says. “It’s crazy. It could be weeks or even months. We offer same-day or next-day appointments. If a doctor calls and says, ‘This catheter needs to be changed,’ or ‘This graft needs to be opened,’ we say, ‘Send ’em over.’ There’s no such thing as next month or even next week. There’s no wait time to have the procedure done here.”

That massively simplifies things for both patients and doctors, and is just one more reason South Jersey Vascular Surgery Center is the right choice. “We’re less expensive and quicker and offer a better patient experience,” Dr. Svigals says. “It’s a convenient experience, and everyone here – nurses, technicians, technologists, receptionists – are warm, kind and helpful. We want to be user-friendly, for patients and their doctors.”
