Selling More Than Houses

Melissa Young
For Melissa Young, real estate isn’t just about selling houses – it’s about storytelling.
“Every home has its own story – who built it, how it’s evolved, the energy that’s been there over time,” says Young, a real estate agent with Compass. “I love pairing that with the right person or family. It’s not just about finding four walls and a roof – it’s about connecting people to a space that reflects who they are and how they want to live.”
Young began her career in executive recruiting before being headhunted by a Fortune 500 company. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the youngest national sales manager ever hired at Equifax. There, she says, she honed her skills in negotiation and contract expertise, acting as a liaison for Fortune 500 companies and helping design national credit marketing campaigns.
But it was her long-standing fascination with houses that ultimately drew her to real estate.
“I’ve always loved construction,” she says. “I love how a house is built, the architecture, the art of a home. The story of a house is just incredible.”
Her career took a star-studded turn right from the start.
“My first real estate listing was Terrell Owens’ house,” says Young. “I went after it, all-in. I knew nothing about football – still don’t, honestly – but I called his sports agent every single day.”
Eventually, she landed the deal and with it, a niche.
“From there it just snowballed from one football player to another,” she says. “I’ve probably represented some of the best-known players in the country.”
“Especially in the beginning, I’d be at the games, up in the box seats, driving guys like DeSean Jackson home in my car,” she adds. “Everyone has their sport – mine just happens to be houses.”
Today, Young is a leading agent with Compass Real Estate in Moorestown, the #1 brokerage in U.S. sales volume. She’s also a member of Compass’s elite Sports & Entertainment Division, a network of 170+ agents across 75+ markets. She’s guided high-profile transactions nationwide and is known for her confidentiality, strategy and precision.
“What I love most is that, even though they’re professional athletes, at the end of the day they’re just people looking for a place that feels right – somewhere to call home,” she says.
Young’s approach to real estate is hands-on and deeply personal.
“I’m a very hands-on agent,” she says. “I really hunt for my clients’ houses. If you told me what you’re looking for, I’d go after it like a little pitbull until I found it for you.”
Young prides herself on avoiding the impersonal churn of big real estate operations.
“I don’t run some massive operation,” she says. “I have a team of agents, but when you work with me – or with anyone on my team – you’re working with that person one-on-one. Some real estate teams operate on a huge scale, but it can start to feel a little impersonal – like going to Walmart.”
Ultimately, her passion for the work is what drives her.
“You’re matching the history of the house with the lifestyle of the client,” says Young. “Every home has a history – who built it, who lived there, the moments that shaped it. I like to tell the story, and I’ve been lucky enough to have the ability to do that.”
3 Things You’re Getting Wrong About the South Jersey Housing Market
1. “The market’s slowing down.” “People say, ‘The market’s bad,’ and I’m like, ‘No, you’re just looking in the wrong area,’” says Melissa Young of Compass Real Estate in Moorestown. “We’re still short on inventory, and our property values are still rising.”
2. “There’s plenty of inventory out there.” “Not even close,” says Young. “We used to have 210 homes on the market – now we’re sitting at around 45. It’s crazy.”
3. “Big luxury homes are out of style.” “Not anymore,” Young says. “The luxury market’s back, and buyers want flexible, high-end space – often with full in-law suites or attached homes for multi-generational living.”
