Celebrating 45 years of caring for the South Jersey community
“We’ve evaluated what was most important to our patients and the people they love, and we are committed to expanding our services to meet their needs at any stage of the healthcare journey.”
For 45 years, Samaritan has been a trusted healthcare provider at some of life’s most tender moments – providing compassionate, home-based healthcare and supportive services to individuals and families in South Jersey.
“We want patients and families to feel supported at every stage of their healthcare journey,” says Phillip W. Heath, Samaritan’s president & CEO. “We are the region’s leader in providing expert care navigation for serious illnesses.”
Samaritan’s roots are deep in South Jersey. Founded as one of the nation’s first hospices, the organization has grown into a comprehensive home-based healthcare provider of primary care, palliative medicine and hospice care.
It is also the only organization in South Jersey offering two inpatient hospice care units – one in Camden County and another in Burlington County. When a patient’s symptoms require around-the-clock intensive care, each provides private rooms in a comfortable, home-like environment where patients can receive
necessary care and be close to their loved ones.
But, Heath says, the organization continues to evolve.
“In recent years, we’ve evaluated what was most important to our patients and the people they love, and we are committed to expanding our services to meet their needs at any stage of the healthcare journey.”
Samaritan’s ever-expanding services include social connections, veterans services, caregiver resources, grief support and volunteer services. Last year, Samaritan served over 11,000 patients, clients and their families providing care to address the physical, emotional and social needs of individuals facing serious illness and aging.
Most recently, in response to the growing issue of social isolation and loneliness, Samaritan launched the Social Isolation, Loneliness & Connection Collaborative to combat the loneliness crisis, bringing together the National Coalition to End Social Isolation and Loneliness, the National Foundation to End Social Isolation and Loneliness, a group of 40-some South Jersey nonprofits, and several major health systems in the area.
“We are looking at real solutions to help people during their most complex and vulnerable times,” says Heath.
Those solutions include Samaritan’s expansion of its home-based primary care services, easing the burden of accessing vital care for those with chronic illness or mobility issues.
“Since 1980, it has been our privilege to care for generations of our neighbors,” says Heath. “We thank the people of South Jersey for inviting us into their homes and allowing us to become part of the fabric of our community.”
In fact, Samaritan has many people within the organization who have been part of the team for over 30 years, each an essential and valued part of the organization’s growth and transformation.
Samaritan was recently honored with Top Workplaces New Jersey and Philadelphia/Delaware Valley, along with National Top Workplaces Culture Excellence Award for Purpose & Values, based on employee feedback.
“When you look at the work our team does every day, you realize how much their clinical expertise and compassion make a difference,” he says. “The Samaritan care team gives families an opportunity to be caregivers to their loved ones without the burden of doing it alone.”
As Samaritan looks to the future, it remains committed to serving the com-munity with the same dedication that has defined its work for the past 45 years.
“We’re excited for the future of Samaritan,” Heath says. “We’re excited that we continue to be an integral part of this community, and we look forward to doing that for many years to come.”
