2026 South Jersey’s Face of Menopausal Care: The Women’s Group for OB/GYN

Wendy Martinez, MD, FACOG, NCMP
For women navigating the physical and emotional changes that can come with menopause, Wendy Martinez, MD, has an encouraging message: you don’t have to simply accept feeling miserable as part of getting older. There are ways to feel better.
With nearly 40 years of experience caring for women, Dr. Martinez has made menopause care an important focus of her practice. Her commitment to this specialty is reflected in her distinction as one of the first four physicians in New Jersey to become certified by The Menopause Society (formerly the North American Menopause Society) as a Certified Menopause Practitioner. Today, she is frequently invited to lecture on menopause-related topics and continues to stay at the forefront of developments in menopausal care.
For Dr. Martinez, providing quality menopause care means giving women something they often don’t have enough of: time.
“You cannot consult with a menopause patient at an annual exam,” she says. “I dedicate one entire day of the week for women to come in, and all we’re discussing is menopause. We go from A to Z.”
“It’s not just about one symptom,” she continues. “I want to understand what my patient is experiencing and how it is affecting her life.”
While hot flashes and night sweats may be the symptoms most commonly associated with menopause, the changes can extend far beyond those.
Dr. Martinez takes a comprehensive approach, discussing concerns such as sleep, sexual and urinary health, exercise, nutrition, bone health and metabolic changes. From there, she develops a treatment plan based on each woman’s individual symptoms, age, medical history and overall health.
That individualized approach is especially important when discussing menopausal hormone therapy (HRT). As interest in HRT continues to grow, Dr. Martinez emphasizes that there is no universal treatment that is right for every woman.
“You have to individualize,” she says.
The type of hormone therapy, how it is administered and a woman’s personal medical history can all play a role in determining what may be appropriate. Oral estrogen, patches, gels and vaginal estrogen each have different considerations, as do the various forms of progesterone.
Many of her patients experience significant improvement, with some finding relief from most of the symptoms that initially brought them to her office.
For Dr. Martinez, staying informed about these distinctions is an essential part of providing the best possible care. She regularly attends The Menopause Society’s annual meeting, where physicians and researchers from around the world gather to discuss the latest developments in menopause treatment and care.
“My approach is straightforward,” she says. “I listen to what my patient is experiencing, so I can understand the whole picture. Then I give the time and expertise needed to find what will work for that patient.”
“Menopause is a natural part of life,” Dr. Martinez says, “but you don’t have to feel miserable going through it.”
Dr. Martinez is certified by The Menopause Society (formerly the North American Menopause Society) as a menopause practitioner. She was one of the first four physicians in NJ to have this certification.
