Learning Centered Around You
“Our students are adult learners, and we work hard to ensure our courses meet their needs and honor their experience.”
Earning a college degree has never been more accessible. At Thomas Edison State University (TESU), students can take courses anytime and anywhere, thanks to its innovative online model, which has existed for more than two decades in the digital space.
“There are two pieces that set us apart,” says Dr. Merodie A. Hancock, president of TESU. “First, we’ve been doing online learning for a long time, and as a result, we’re able to create a robust experience that takes full advantage of digital resources. Everything we do is predominantly online, with the exception of nursing, which can be hybrid. Secondly, our students are adult learners, and we work hard to ensure our courses meet their needs and honor their experience.”
Chartered in 1972, TESU is one of New Jersey’s senior public institutions of higher learning and one of the oldest higher education institutions in the country designed specifically for adults. The University offers associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs in more than 100 areas of study as well as undergraduate, graduate and professional certificates. TESU starts a new term every month year-round. Undergraduate courses are 12 weeks; graduate courses run eight weeks.
Courses incorporate live sessions (offered in real time or recorded), interactive chats, group projects, real world simulations and, where appropriate, virtual reality. “We put a tremendous amount of research into the development of our courses,” says Dr. Hancock. “We bring together a team of experts in subject matter, technology and assessment to develop the curriculum. We have mentor-led courses versus faculty taught courses to allow students to do a deep dive into the curriculum and learn from each other as they achieve mastery in the subject. Our courses average about 10-15 students for individualized attention.”
Prospective students may “test drive” a course to see if online learning is a good fit. The university also accepts transfer credits and provides credit for career experience and military service. Scholarships and financial aid are also available.
“We provide a lot of flexibility and support,” says Dr. Hancock. “We offer a suite of online support services from career counseling to mental health resources. We are always open. Students can work night shifts and still pursue their degree. They can be serving on a submarine overseas and still complete their coursework. We help make our students’ goals accessible so they can achieve their dreams.”
