Johan van Schalkwyk, PT
For the past 18 years, Johan van Schalkwyk has treated all kinds of patients – from NFL players and high school athletes to 1-year-old children and 98-year-olds still going strong.
As the owner and founder of Orthopedic & Sports Therapy in Cherry Hill, van Schalkwyk has been dedicated to providing individualized care in a caring, comfortable atmosphere.
“We provide quality care and friendly encouragement to help patients foster a positive attitude toward their rehabilitation,” van Schalkwyk says. “Patients can expect to receive premier treatment, customer service and one-to-one care.”
A career in physical therapy wasn’t always the plan for van Schalkwyk, however. “I had dreams of becoming a professional golfer, but I suffered some injuries and underwent physical therapy for my own back pain,” he says. “While there, I was drawn to the idea of providing physical therapy and began to pursue a career in the field so I could help others.”
Since founding Orthopedic & Sports Therapy in 2002, van Schalkwyk has helped countless patients suffering from orthopedic and sports injuries, neck and back pain, headaches, disc conditions and more. His experience has made him a trusted expert in innovative physical therapy techniques, such as trigger-point dry needling, non-surgical spinal decompression, and selective functional movement assessment.
In 2012, van Schalkwyk also became certified in the Schroth Method, a physiotherapeutic treatment system which uses isometric and other exercises to strengthen or lengthen asymmetrical muscles in people suffering from scoliosis.
“Seeing the kids with scoliosis and stopping it from getting worse or helping it get a little bit better so they don’t have to have surgery is very rewarding,” says van Schalkwyk. “Seeing patients get better is definitely one of the most rewarding parts of my job. It feels good to help people reach where they want to get and achieve their goals.”
