2026 South Jersey’s Face of Plastic Surgery: Metropolitan Plastic Surgery

Julia Spears, MD, FACS, BOARD CERTIFIED PLASTIC SURGEON
For Dr. Julia Spears, exceptional healthcare begins long before any treatment. It begins with listening.
“My goal is to give patients a more personal experience rather than a very clinical, sterile environment,” she says. “I want to get to know my patients, understand their needs and give them individualized care.”
That philosophy is at the heart of Metropolitan Plastic Surgery, the boutique Marlton practice Dr. Spears founded after more than 20 years in medicine. As one of a relatively few female plastic surgeons in a specialty that remains predominantly male, she has built her practice around artistry, safety and compassion, creating an environment where conversations matter as much as outcomes.
“Our practice combines the art, beauty and science of plastic surgery with a focus on aesthetic medicine and helping each patient achieve their individual goals,” she says. “I stay closely involved in every patient’s journey.”
Dr. Spears’ approach was shaped by an extensive career in academic medicine. She trained at Temple University, where she later became an associate professor and assistant of the residency program, before moving to Hahnemann University Hospital, where she helped establish a plastic surgery department under Drexel University.
The work was rigorous and wide-ranging, encompassing reconstructive surgery, teaching and a demanding clinical schedule. But the experience also showed Dr. Spears what she wanted to do differently.
“We had a huge volume of patients and only 15 minutes with each one. We were seeing 60 patients a day,” she says. “It really wasn’t the kind of individual attention I wanted to give patients.”
When Hahnemann closed, Dr. Spears saw an opportunity to create a different kind of practice, one where she could spend more time with patients and remain closely involved throughout their care.
Today, Metropolitan Plastic Surgery reflects that vision. Rather than a large, institutional setting, patients enter a smaller office designed to feel warm, welcoming and personal.
“We’re not in a hospital. We’re in our own small office,” she says. “We have a team-oriented practice, and we strive to make our patients feel very comfortable.”
For Dr. Spears, the ultimate goal extends beyond changing how someone looks. It’s about understanding what brought a patient to her in the first place and helping that person feel more confident and whole.
“Plastic surgery can help people feel put back together again and feel whole again,” she says. “To become what they envision themselves as being, both physically and mentally.”
