South Jersey Summer Safety Tips

Don’t let your summer fun get interrupted by someone getting hurt. Check out these safety tips to have a cool, not crazy, summer.

Stay above water

Cooling off in the pool or the waves is a blast (and a much-needed refresher during those hot days), but safety has to come first when you’re getting ready to cool off. If you’re going to swim, be sure to have a buddy who is with you, and if you’re with a child who can’t swim, make sure they’re within an arm’s reach at all times.

Speaking of swim lessons, it’s great to get your kids started early so they can stay safe while in the water. But even for kids who know how to swim, it’s important to have eyes on them at all times.

Can you see the lifeguard?

When you’re at the beach, it can be tempting to wander off to less crowded areas for a peaceful swim, but that can be risky. When you’re in the water, make sure you can always see a lifeguard to stay safe.

Wear bright colors

It pays to stand out, especially when it comes to water safety. When you’re getting dressed for your day at the beach or the pool, opt for the bathing suit that is bright over those neutral tones. When you’re wearing bright colors, it’s easier for lifeguards to see you and make sure you’re safe.

Do you know where your water bottle is?

With higher temps making us want to spend our days outside under the sun, staying hydrated is becoming even more important. Dehydration can lead to dizziness, heat stroke, fatigue and headaches – which makes for a not-so-fun summer. So make sure you’re drinking enough water through the day, and even add foods with a lot of water like watermelon, cucumber, radishes and celery to your summer diet.

We love the sun, but not too much

As much as we love feeling the warm sun on our skin, exposure to those UV rays can lead to skin cancer. The CDC recommends using sunscreen with at least SPF 15 when you’re going outside, and be especially careful between 10 am and 4 pm, when the UV rays are the strongest. In addition to sunscreen, find shady areas, wear a hat and wear sunglasses for extra protection. And don’t forget to check the expiration date on that sunscreen you’ve been using – they do expire.
