You probably know that recreational use of marijuana is now legal in New Jersey, but you may not know exactly what that means. Here are a few facts about the new law:

• You can buy, own and use up to 1 ounce of cannabis on private property as long as you get it from a state-approved dispensary. Landlords, however, do have the right to restrict use on their property.

• You can’t be criminally charged for the following: having up to 6 ounces of cannabis, being under the influence of marijuana, having vape pens and other devices used to get high on weed or having marijuana while driving (but the law does restrict driving under the influence.)

• You can’t grow your own pot in the state. And don’t take your legally purchased pot out of state – even to other states that have legalized it. Outside New Jersey, cannabis purchased legally here is considered illegal.

There are 5 South Jersey dispensaries open for adult-use sales (you’ll need to show ID to prove you are 21 or older):

The Botanist, Egg Harbor Twp.

The Botanist, Williamstown

Cannabist Deptford Dispensary

Cannabist Vineland Dispensary
