Drivers looking to cross Townsends Inlet bridge, connecting Avalon and Sea Isle City, will need to find a new route. The bridge has been shut down indefinitely after an inspection found structural damage 20 feet under water.

While bridge maintenance was scheduled for the 2017-2018 winter season before the inspection, these findings have called for more immediate action, the Sea Isle City Police Department wrote in a Facebook post.

Cape May County Engineer Dale Foster said the repairs are expected to be finished before Memorial Day weekend.

In the meantime, drivers can use Route 9 or the Garden State Parkway to travel between Avalon and Sea Isle City.
