The birds are singing, the sun is shining and spring is in full bloom. Now is as good a time as any to get your hands dirty and get in-tune with Mother Nature. Keep reading for 10 incredible Earth Day celebrations that will change the way you see the world.


1. Get Behind The Wheel of an Electric Car!

April 22 (noon – 3 pm) | Glassboro Town Square

Thinking about minimizing your carbon footprint? Glassboro’s first annual Learn Electric Automobile Day (LEAD) is the perfect way for you to get familiar with environmentally friendly electric vehicles. Attendees (with a valid driving license) will be able to test drive a Tesla, Nissan Leaf, BMW i3, Chevy Bolt and others through downtown Glassboro and on Route 55. Motorcyclists, don’t feel left out – electric bikes will be there waiting for you too.


2. South Jersey Quail Project Youth Education Conservation Day

April 27 | Cumberland County

Join Smokey the Bear, NJ’s Forestry Service, NJ’s  Division of Fish and Wildlife, and other environmental groups during the Youth Education Conservation Day. Children will receive a continental breakfast before spending the day learning about natural habitats and how to care for them. Experts will teach them to identify plants and lead in a planting of grasses, bushes, plants and flowers. Lunch is also included, and kids will have a blast on the hayride.



3. Pinelands Preservation Alliance Native Plant Sale

April 26 and 27 (11 am – 3:00 pm) | Southampton

Make your garden thrive this year by planting trees, shrubs and wildflowers that are native to South Jersey soil. The Pinelands Preservation Alliance will curate a selection of quality plants from various nurseries, as well as offer gardening advice. Enjoy gardening lectures and tours of the historic barn and farmhouse.



4. Earth Day Celebration at Gloucester County Library

April 27 (11 am – noon) | Gloucester

Learn how to incorporate earth-friendly choices and habits into your everyday life during this cool Earth Day Celebration at Gloucester County Library. Patrons will create unique pots with recyclable materials and the real fun starts when you watch the seeds of your labor grow at home. If you’re willing to get your hands dirty, stick around and help plant a variety of new plants on the library grounds.



5. Arbor Day Habitat Improvement

April 28 (1 – 3:30 pm) | Rancocas Nature Center

The Rancocas Nature Center needs your help to revitalize the Pine Plantation on the Blue Trail. Team up with naturalists and staff as you plant pine tree seedlings among aging trees to help ensure the forest will last for another generation. All tools and equipment are provided, so keep your shovels at home.  Refreshments will be available and all participants should wear comfy clothes and shoes.


6.  10th Sustainable South Jersey Earth Festival and Family Fun Bike Ride

May 4  (9:45 am – 2 pm) | Historic Croft Farm, Cherry Hill

Join the 5,000 visitors who will make the 10th Sustainable South Jersey Earth Festival the best one yet. Two stages will be packed with entertainment, and there will also be a fun family bike ride. Get some free seedlings and eat at healthy local vendor booths. The theme of this year’s event is “Reduce Plastic Fantastic” so no disposable water bottles please. 7. 25th Annual Earth Day Celebration at Historic Smithville Park

June 10 (10 am – 4 pm) | Mt Holly, NJ 08060

Get gardening advice from the one and only Mike McGrath of WHYY’s “You Bet Your Garden” and jam to music by April Mae and the June Bugs (a band currently touring the country on a bus powered by vegetable oil). The kids will have so much fun with live animal exhibits, face painting, trash sculpting, paper making, story-telling and more. You can also learn from several educational workshops, shop with “green” vendors and browse the work of artists, crafters and performers that have an earth-friendly theme.
