The NJ Counts 2017 report released by Monarch Housing Associates found that the number of homeless people in New Jersey decreased by 4.6 percent from 2016 to 2017.

Each year, the NJ Counts team records the number of individuals who are homeless on one night. On Jan. 24, 2017, the team recorded 8,532 men, women and children as homeless.

“While the slight decrease in homelessness in New Jersey is a positive result, the reality is that the size of the homeless population has remained relatively the same from 2016 to 2017,” said Taiisa Kelly, a senior associate at Monarch Housing Associates. “The fact that the number of homeless individuals and families has not risen gives us hope. But the decrease in homelessness is within the statistical margin of error.”

While the overall number of homeless individuals in the state decreased in the last year, the number of people identified as chronically homeless showed a 35.3 percent increase since 2016.
